A Journey Toward Better Health

Physical, mental, emotional, social, spiritual, even financial health—all of it matters. When we nurture these dimensions, we don’t just survive; we thrive.

As the clock struck midnight on New Year’s Eve and a new year quietly unfolded, I found myself reflecting on what truly matters. Above everything else, one word kept resurfacing: health—in every sense of the word.

It is health that is real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver.

Physical, mental, emotional, social, spiritual, even financial health—all of it matters. When we nurture these dimensions, we don’t just survive; we thrive. We show up better for the people we love, perform better at work, and experience life more fully. This year, I made a personal decision: to be more intentional about my well-being and to encourage others to do the same—by exploring, taking action, and tracking our progress together.

That decision was reinforced by a conversation that deeply moved me and highlighted a silent but very real threat to our health.

A Conversation That Changed Everything

One cold January afternoon, my friend Flo called me. The moment she spoke, I knew something wasn’t right.

“Ade, I don’t feel like I can hold things together anymore,” she said quietly. “It feels like the weight of the world is on my shoulders.”

As we talked, everything poured out. Work had become overwhelming, her savings were shrinking, and the constant stream of global economic news—rising inflation, layoffs, recession fears—had left her anxious and emotionally exhausted.

“It’s not just one thing,” she admitted. “It’s everything. The future feels so uncertain.”

Listening to her, I realized how many people are silently carrying similar burdens. Stress has a way of building quietly, sneaking into our lives until it begins to affect not just our minds, but our bodies too.

Then she said something that stopped me in my tracks.

“I’ve been having chest pains,” she said. “It’s not sharp, but it feels heavy—like pressure. Sometimes I struggle to breathe.”

At that moment, it became clear that this wasn’t just emotional stress anymore. It was physical. Her symptoms reminded me of something I had recently read about—Broken Heart Syndrome.

The Silent Danger: Broken Heart Syndrome

Broken Heart Syndrome, medically known as Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy, is a temporary heart condition often triggered by intense emotional or physical stress. Contrary to what the name suggests, it’s not caused only by romantic heartbreak. Financial pressure, job insecurity, grief, or even constant exposure to distressing news can trigger it.

What makes this condition especially dangerous is that it closely mimics a heart attack. Many people dismiss the symptoms, assuming it’s “just stress,” and delay seeking medical help.

Common symptoms include:

  • Persistent chest pain or pressure

  • Shortness of breath

  • Extreme fatigue

  • Irregular heartbeat

  • Dizziness or fainting

If you or someone you know experiences these symptoms, it’s essential to seek medical attention immediately—no second-guessing.

Taking Action Saves Lives

Thankfully, Flo’s story had a hopeful turn. She listened to her body and visited her doctor. Tests confirmed it wasn’t a heart attack, but Broken Heart Syndrome. With proper medication, rest, and intentional stress management, she began to recover.

Her experience reminded me of how important it is to take our health seriously—especially in times of prolonged stress.

Here are a few ways we can protect ourselves:

  • Never ignore warning signs. When in doubt, seek medical help.

  • Manage stress intentionally. Deep breathing, movement, prayer, meditation, or journaling can make a real difference.

  • Limit negative news intake. Stay informed, but set boundaries.

  • Talk it out. Sharing your burdens with trusted people or professionals brings relief.

  • Prioritize overall wellness. Good nutrition, regular exercise, and quality sleep are non-negotiable.

Choosing Health, One Step at a Time

By the end of our conversation, Flo sounded lighter. “I feel better just talking about it,” she said. “But I know I need to make real changes.”

Her words stayed with me.

Stress doesn’t announce itself loudly—it creeps in quietly, affecting our minds and, eventually, our bodies. This year, let’s choose a more holistic approach to health. Whether it’s managing stress, strengthening relationships, or caring for our hearts, every small step counts.

Stay with me on this journey. Together, we’ll explore, take action, and track our progress. When the year comes to an end, I believe we’ll look back grateful that we chose ourselves—and our well-being—first.
